In March 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit and the quarantine mandate was issued, we found ourselves reflecting on how disconnected we had become from our traditional practices. We finally had the time to contemplate our futures and come together as ‘ohana, return to David’s ‘ohana ‘aina, and re-open lo'i kalo, which had not been used in over a decade. As a result, Wailua Nui Kalo Farm was established in January 2021 by David Kekiwi, 4th generation farmer and Krystal Cabiles, with the initial goal of securing a food source for our ‘ohana, as well as a source of income, while also offering an outlet for educating our keiki in farming and sustainability without the use of electronics.
